Research

For me research is an opportunity to produce new knowledge and to deepen linguistic understanding of the world.

Wardrops' Collection Online

Wardrops’ Collection Online aims to stimulate different approaches to linguistic, literary, historical and socio-cultural studies of documents represented in the Wardrop Collection and to foster a fuller understanding of context that they represent. The main objectives of the project were as follows:

  • to provide critical online edition of manuscripts, which includes the production of a diplomatic transcription, physical description and supporting commentary for each document;
  • to prepare .xml files needed for the further publishing this edition to the web with free worldwide access at no charge to the end-user;
  • to equip .xml files with special tags indicating persons, places and dates in the published materials, which will be used for the linking purposes;
  • to provide a working model for future web-based collection.
The materials prepared within the project were allocated online with free access to the end-user and uploaded to GitHub repository of Digital Bodleian. The project was implemented within the joint research program between the University of Oxford and the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation.

The Wardrops' Collection Online is attached to the projects of the European Association for Digital Humanities (EADH), follow the link.

On-Line Dictionary of Idioms

The On-Line Dictionary of Idioms is bilingual in Modern Georgian and Modern Greek, includes approximately 12000 entries and reflects the function and meaning of idioms. It combines features of translation and learner's Dictionaries.

Innovations:

  • It is the first attempt to compile the Georgian – Modern Greek and Modern Greek – Georgian Dictionaries of Idioms;
  • It is the first attempt in Georgian Lexicography to equip the entries of bilingual dictionaries with transcription fields;
  • The internal system enables the ‘Advanced Search’ option, which allows users to perform a more extensive search associated with grammatical structure of words.
The On-Line Dictionary of Idioms is linked to the International Lexicological Portal.

Morphological Analyzer of Modern Georgian Language

The Morphological analyzer of Modern Georgian Language is developed as bi-directional finite state transducer by means of Xerox Finite State Tools (xfst and lexc), which is sufficient for capturing morphological structure of Modern Georgian Language. The system includes 13 blocks of the existing Part of Speech (PoS) of Modern Georgian language as well as separate blocks for Punctuation and Abbreviations, while the pattern for Verbal Paradigm is subdivided into additional 66 groups as described by D. Melikishvili (2001) and an additional group for irregular verbs.

The analyzer was used for the linguistic annotation of the Corpus of Modern Georgian Language. The implementation of both projects were carried out under the financial support of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation.
